According to Friedrich Mohs, hardness of minerals is classified into 10 levels, and there’s a representative mineral for each level. Actually, Mohs Hardness is represented by numbers with no “H” suffix.
Smartphone screens are usually at a Mohs Hardness of 5-6, so that knifes and keys can’t scratch. Coins, knifes and keys are usually made of copper, iron and steel which can’t scratch Mohs 6.5 glass screen protectors, then why Corning Gorilla screens above Mohs 6 are usually scratched?
The main reason of screen scratches is SiO2 (sand). Sand is of a Mohs Hardness of 6-7, and it exists everywhere, so that there are scratches on screens.
After knowing the idea of Mohs Hardness, what on earth does 9H marks on glass protectors mean? The so called H means the hardness of pencil, and when a protector claims that it is 9H, it could resist scratches from the hardest pencil.
From soft to hard, pencil hardness are from 9B to 9H, and comparing glass material with pencil is meaningless.
